About APNQ

Mission Statement

The Association of Pacific Northwest Quilters (APNQ) promotes the art of quiltmaking and encourages and rewards quiltmakers in the greater Northwest region. APNQ presents juried and judged quilt exhibitions and seeks to provide quilt-related enrichment programs for the community of quilters and the public.

Value Statement

We value

    Quiltmaking as an art form
    Excellence in quiltmaking
The traditions of the past and the opportunities of the future
    The essential contributions of volunteers

History

APNQ was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers from the Puget Sound area, the Olympia Peninsula and eastern Washington. The association's intention was to present the first juried and judged international competition among quilters of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington in the US, and Alberta, British Columbia and Yukon in Canada. (Canada's Northwest Territories was added in 1999.)

These visionaries recognized that this region is home to thousands of quilting enthusiasts and a proliferation of companies that support a nationwide, billion-dollar quilting industry. Building on this solid support for quiltmaking, the founders of APNQ created the organization to showcase quilts and reward their makers at a venue within the region. The 1994 Great Pacific Northwest Quilt Show, held at the Seattle Center's Northwest Rooms, was the first juried and judged competition among quiltmakers of the Pacific Northwest and western Canada.

Activities

In addition to a biennial Quiltfest show, APNQ has hosted other quilt-related projects throughout the years. Ongoing activities include invitational traveling exhibits, each with quilts created by members, that center on a particular theme. Donated by their member-creators, each collection of quilts travels the US and Canada for two years before being auctioned at a fund-raiser benefiting APNQ. APNQ also hosts a three-dimensional quilted art exhibit, centering on a particular object form. The collection of three-dimensional art travels within APNQ's local region and is also auctioned off at APNQ's Gala Dinner and Auction, hosted during Quiltfest.

Past non-show year events have included a wearable-art collection of vest panels based on patterns by noted designer Lorraine Torrence, an assemblage of designer bathrobes, and a lecture series.

APNQ also organizes photography days to help quiltmakers obtain professional-quality images of their work.

Membership

You don't have to quilt to join APNQ; membership is open to all who look to support quiltmaking and the quilting arts in the Pacific Northwest. While entry submission for Quiltfest is restricted to legal residents of Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Northwest Territories, Oregon, Washington and Yukon, all other benefits of membership are available to any who wish to join. To learn more about APNQ membership, go to the membership page.

Read the latest APNQ newsletters online -just go to the Newsletter page to find out what's new with APNQ. The APNQ newsletters are "electronic" now, so be sure to sign up to receive your e-newsletter and periodic updates by email.

Sponsorship

Sponsorship is a wonderful way for those interested in supporting APNQ at a deeper level, and who are interested in becoming a more active supporter of APNQ and the quilting arts, to financially help APNQ reach its goals. Anyone is welcome to become a sponsor. There are three different types of APNQ sponsorship: individual, corporate and guild affiliations.
