2008 Jurors & Judges
APNQ'S 2008 selection committee focused on selecting a
qualified panel of jurors and judges, well-balanced as to traditional and
modern backgrounds. They are
charged with supporting the association's philosophy: To present the
highest-quality juried and judged exhibition of quilts at Quiltfest.
J U R O R S
Sherri Bain Driver - Tucson,
AZ
A quiltmaker
since 1987, Sherri began judging quilts in 1991, and in 1997 became a
National Quilting Association Certified judge. She has judged quilt shows
including NQA and The Appliqué Society's national show. She is judging
coordinator for the National Quilting Association's 2007 and 2008 shows.
Senior editor for Quiltmaker
magazine for more than 5 years, she currently edits patterns and articles
for American Quilter magazine.
Sherri designs her own traditional and innovative quilts. Among her honors in major shows
are three Best of Show and three Best Machine Quilting awards. She is an
eight-time finalist in the Museum of the American Quilter's Society's
annual challenge, New Quilts from an Old Favorite.
Stevii Graves - Leesburg, VA
Involved with
quilt making since 1975, Stevii has juried and judged competitions
throughout the U.S., and is judging coordinator for Road to California.
She is a past President of the California Heritage Quilt Project, and
served as President of Quilt San Diego/Visions. Her quilts have been
published in books and magazines and have been exhibited both nationally
and internationally. She has edited two Visions catalogues and is the co-author of Contemporary Quilting, released in
2005. Stevii is a graduate of Hampton University with a degree in Human
Ecology Education. She worked for eight years for the United States Navy
Memorial in Washington, DC as a fundraiser, and in 2000, was given the
Department of the Navy's Meritorious Public Service Award.
Linda McCuean - New Galilee, PA
Linda is a
professional longarm quilter and teacher, lecturer, and quilt maker. She has been making quilts since
1978, and became certified as an NQA Quilt Judge in 2004. She has judged
29 shows, totaling 2,974 quilts. Her work is highly regarded, having
received many machine workmanship awards and several best of show awards
in national level events, including the grand prize in the $100,000
Quilting Challenge. Linda has appeared on the NBC Today show with
her quilt, "Bella", for the announcement as the $100,000
Quilting Challenge winner, and has appeared twice as a feature quilter on
'Linda's Longarm Quilting' television show. In addition, her quilts have
been published in numerous books, calendars and magazines.
J U D G E S
Diane Gaudynski - Waukesha WI
Experienced
teacher, judge and master quilter, Diane has had twelve quilts juried
into the AQS show in Paducah, Kentucky. She has judged this event and the IQA Show and Contest
in Houston. Four of Diane's quilts won the prestigious Bernina Award for
Machine Workmanship at the AQS Show in Paducah, KY, 1997-2000, and are
now in the permanent collection of the Museum of the American Quilter's
Society. One of her first
quilts, "Feathered Star," appears in Harriet Hargrave's
Heirloom Machine Quilting. "Arnie's Rising Stars" received a
second-place award at Paducah in 1996 and was the Wisconsin winner in the
Land's End - Good Housekeeping 1996 All-American Quilt Contest. Its slide
and contest entry are now in the archives of the American Folk Life
Center at the Library of Congress.
Yvonne Porcella - Modesto, CA
Quilt artist,
author of nine books, and international teacher, Yvonne is the founder
and served as President of Studio Art Quilt Associates for 11 years. She was honored in 1998 as the
30th inductee of the Quilters Hall of Fame in Marion, Indiana. She
has served as wearable art
and quilt exhibition judge since the 1980s in the major national quilt
shows and has curated art quilt exhibitions. Her work has been exhibited
internationally and collected by major museums. Currently she serves on
the Board of Directors of The Alliance for American Quilts, Asheville,
NC. Michigan State University has selected her as a Quilt Treasure for a
documentation project archiving the history of American Quiltmakers.

Anita Shackelford - Bucyrus, OH
A quiltmaker
since 1967, Anita began teaching in 1980. She is an internationally
recognized quiltmaker, teacher, author and lecturer who loves combining
applique and fine hand quilting to create new quilts in 19th
century style. Her work and antique quilts from her collection have been
featured in gallery and museum exhibits as well as books and magazines.
Two of her quilts have received the Mary Krickbaum Award for best hand quilting. Her quilts have been exhibited in
the United States, Australia and Japan, winning awards, including twelve
Best of Show and many for workmanship. A member of the National Quilting Association since
1982, she served four years on the NQA Board. She is a charter member of
the American Quilter's Society and the Museum of American Quilter's
Society.
