exhibit to open in Salem, Oregon
Quilters and fiber artists in the
Salem, Oregon area have a treat in store: APNQ's "Spice of
Life" invitational traveling exhibit opens at Mission Mill Museum
October 11, and will run through December 23.
At noon on Friday, October 12,
area resident Lynn Williams, APNQ board emeritus, will introduce
"Spice" with a special half-hour presentation at the Museum

It's almost here -
the Really Big
"Show
Brochure" for Quiltfest 2008!
Coming soon to every APNQ member's mailbox is the
eagerly awaited Show Brochure that covers everything you want to know
about entering and attending the 2008 APNQ Pacific Northwest Quiltfest in
Seattle, August 8-10.
The 18-page brochure will explain everything that's
new and different about Quiltfest 2008. The brochure will also update you on events, entry
categories and specs, special exhibits, the next invitational traveling
exhibit, the festive Gala, and all the other wonderful activities you've
come to expect from Quiltfest.
First and foremost among the "new stuff" is
the site: Quiltfest is moving from the Seattle Center to the spacious
Washington State Convention and Trade Center in downtown Seattle.
And, for the first time, you can sign up for hands-on
classes with an outstanding roster of nationally known quilt
instructors-and you won't need to bring your machine!
Be sure to look for several important changes in the
Entry Information: We will now be accepting digital entries and there are
two new entry categories for you to consider-"Art" and
"Pictorial."
The 2008 Show Brochure will be mailed to every APNQ
member in early September (be sure we have your current mailing address
on file at info@apnq.org). Copies will also be available
through APNQ sponsor guilds and in quilt shops, fabric stores, and major
sewing-machine stores later in September and throughout the rest of the
year. The brochure will also be posted on our website by mid-September for
you to download and print out.

Meet your APNQ
board
Here are the first two installments
in a series introducing you to the APNQ Board of Directors. These
experienced and well-qualified volunteers work tirelessly behind the
scenes.

Sharyn Cole,
President
(Sharyn is pictured with her grandson Chase Waldner.)
A member of the APNQ board since 2002,
Sharyn has presided over the organization since the fall of 2006. Before
stepping up to the top job, she was the venue coordinator for the Wish
You Were Here traveling exhibit that was auctioned at the 2006 Gala, and
curator for the Spice of Life invitational that will be auctioned at
Quiltfest 2008. She was sponsorship chair for 2005-2006, and chaired the
judge/juror selection committee for Quiltfest 2006.
Born in Michigan, Sharyn has lived
in North Dakota, California, Arizona, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan,
Florida, and, finally, Redmond WA. After many different types of
employment, Sharyn says, "I discovered my true talent is in the area
of sales." She has sold cosmetics; taught (and consulted on)
personal color theory, interview skills and personal development, and-in
something of a switch-sold enterprise-solution software to a niche
market.
Sharyn attended her first APNQ
Quiltfest in 1996 and, "awestruck by the quality and beauty of the
quilts presented," joined the organization. In 2000 she retired from
the business world to indulge her passion for quilting. Her business
acumen and leadership skills didn't lie fallow, however, as she quickly
took on a number of responsible roles in her local guild, Block Party
Quilters (Sammamish).
Somehow she still has time to
quilt. Sharyn considers herself to be a traditional quilter with
art-quilter tendencies, enjoys needle-turn applique, "and I continue
to start far more projects than I complete," she admits.

Carol Graves, Director/Treasurer
First as Army brat and then as
career Army officer and Army wife, Carol has lived in more states and
countries than it's possible to name in this space! She cites one
constant along the way: she learned to knit, and produced sweaters for
all her friends and family.
ROTC involvement in her Vermont
college freshman year led to her commission as a 2nd lieutenant upon
graduation ("It was less scary to follow in my dad's footsteps than
it was to be a civilian!"). An assignment in logistics at Fort Lewis
WA was followed by graduate school (Columbia University) where she met
her husband-to-be, then she began teaching psychology to cadets at West
Point. Both she and her
husband were sent to Southwest Asia to fight in Desert Shield/Storm. Carol
entered retirement from the Army when the Graveses were on assignment in
Hawaii.
It was a class in Hawaiian quilting
that got her hooked on quilting, and quilt guilds became her way to make
friends as the family continued to move. Arriving in Seattle in 2000, she
joined Quilters Anonymous and has since served as that guild's co-1st
vice president, quilt show co-chair, and treasurer. She became an APNQ
Board member in October 2006 and will be serving as treasurer for the
coming year. Meantime, she has also been heading up the committee
responsible for contracting with the outstanding lecturers and workshop
teachers lined up for Quiltfest 2008.
(In the picture with Carol is her dog
Maxie.)
