Enter Your Quilt in Quiltfest 2008

APNQ’S PHILOSOPHY is to present the highest quality regional juried and judged exhibition of quilts and wearables at each Pacific Northwest Quiltfest.

An accepted work will be one that presents strong visual impact and stands out above the competition in its category. APNQ believes that a prize-worthy entry will combine and reflect mastery of design principles such as balance, scale, unity and rhythm; excellent use of color, value, intensity and texture; and superior workmanship in the quiltmaking process. This philosophy will serve as the basis for the decisions of the jurors and judges.

APNQ is adding two new quilt entry categories for Quiltfest 2008.

Quiltmaking in our region has evolved since we last revised our categories, and our intention is to more accurately reflect current trends with the addition of these two new divisions. We also hope to encourage quilters to try out new approaches and techniques, as well as broaden the appeal of Quiltfest, the premier juried and judged quilt show in the greater Pacific Northwest.

Category Definitions:

Traditional: Based on traditional-style patterns and sets.

Innovative: Fundamental deviation from traditional patterns and sets using a traditional block or design as a starting point. Quilts in this category should reflect the growth through traditional quilt making.

Pieced: Piecing predominates over appliqué, or other technique either in amount or effect.

Applique: Applique' predominates over piecing or other techniques in either amount or effect.

Mixed Technique: This category may include any quilt that does not obviously fit into another category. Examples: Non-computerized embroidery; yo-yo quilts; Cathedral Window-style quilts; and quilts that are a balanced combination of more than one technique, such as both appliqué and piecing.

Pictorial: (new category) A quilt that represents a recognizable image of a person, place or thing. May be whole cloth, painted, appliqué, collage or any number of techniques.

Art: (new category) Extends beyond the traditional and innovative disciplines, using personal expression and originality in design, color or technique.

Small: Any quilt with a total perimeter of 100" or less. May be any technique.

Group: Any quilt made by two or more persons including quilting stitches.

Wearable: Fashionable and wearable garment constructed using quilting techniques. Single pieces qualify and ensembles will be considered as a single entry.
